Extension and redesignation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Venezuelans, a desired lifeline that will help thousands of people.

TPS (Temporary Protection Status) is an immigration program that grants temporary protected status to nationals of countries facing extraordinary and temporary conditions, such as armed conflict, natural disasters or humanitarian crises. TPS allows beneficiaries to reside and work legally in the United States for a specific period of time, generally 6 to 18 months, which can be renewed according to the evolution of conditions in their country of origin.

On September 20, 2023, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas announced the extension and redesignation of TPS for Venezuela for 18 months. This redesignation provides temporary protection from removal, as well as employment authorization.

Persons seeking to apply for TPS under this redesignation must demonstrate that they are Venezuelan nationals (or persons without nationality where their last habitual residence was Venezuela) who have resided continuously in the United States since July 31, 2023 and meet other eligibility criteria.

If eligible, Form I-821 must be filed with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and Employment Authorization can also be applied for using Form I-765.

There are currently approximately 242,700 Venezuelan TPS beneficiaries. There are approximately 472,000 additional Venezuelan nationals who may be eligible under the redesignation.
